Lake Vostok Reached

Reports are circulating that the Russian team drilling into Lake Vostok have finally reached their target, just in time before the onset of the Antarctic winter. The total depth drilled through the ice sheet stands at 3,768 metres, though this information is still yet to be confirmed. Lake Vostok has remained sealed off from the world for ~15 million years, therefore the potential discovery of what lies within holds great interest. Sampling the lake water however may have to be postponed until later in the year as temperatures are now falling below -40°C.

The British Antarctic Survey will be starting a similar project later this year, drilling into Lake Ellsworth.
